Bon Cop, Bad Cop
I was flying on a bon vol across the continent today and found Bon Cop, Bad Cop in the francophone section of Air Canada’s movies. I was so excited! I remember seeing it advertised when I was in Montreal over the summer, but sadly I missed out on seeing it. It’s not really a franco film though. It’s decidedly bilingual: pretty much every scene is spoken in snippets of English, Canadian French, and some Franglais. I loved it. I thought it was hilarious.
Colm Feore is great in this film. He plays a stuffy Ontario detective (who speaks wonderful French, by the way) who has to investigate a series of murders motivated by Canadian hockey moving south of the border. The murders are crossed between Ontario and Quebec, so he has to work with a cowboy Montreal-based detective played by Patrick Huard. It’s full of typically Canadian culture clashes: “You’re from Toronto? That’s why I hate your face.” And there are fun things in it for both English and French speakers: “You’re off this suitcase!” and “Rita spelled backwards is atir!” (the latter I didn’t get until I looked it up in Wikipedia… it rhymes with elle tire, Quebecois slang for “she’s promiscuous”). It’s kind of like those kiddy cartoon movies laced with dirty innuendos to make it fun for all attendees.
Anyway, I think this movie is really fun, even maybe for non-Canadians. I’m going to try to find a copy of it while I’m in Toronto/Montreal this week because it’s listed as an import for USD $45 on Amazon.com right now. It was good, but not $45 good…
