Rufus is Back!
Today I revived an old friend.
I was looking for a computer store near my place today so I could replace my failed CPU fan and came across REPC. REPC is, essentially, a big warehouse full of used computer shit. I found a replacement fan and I also found a couple sticks of Rambus memory for my old Rufus (circa 2001). Total: $46.
The fan that I needed was attached to an old power supply, so I had to rip that up and graft it on to my motherboard, but I got it right on my first try. Yay me. Ideally I should’ve had a solder iron, but I made do with a razor and some electrical tape. I installed the new memory and it worked like a charm. I now have 512MB in this bad boy. Rufus is ready for another few years of service.
With such good fortune, surely something bad had to happen. I was just sitting down with a bottle of wine (a Washington syrah… ok, but I’ve had better) and had a glass over at my desk to oversee my new installation of Fedora Core 4. After a couple glasses, a reached over to pour myself another and knocked my glass over, spilling inky syrah all over my weathered and unsealed hardwood floor. Suck. Well, I ran over to the kitchen and grabbed a towel to sop up the wine. While cleaning up my mess, however, I gashed my hand open on a piece of my now-defunct-stemware. Shit. I did the best I could with my floor (there is now a love mark that clearly indicates the spill) and then went to tend to my poor, wounded paw. It’s in a pretty blue bandage now, and I think I’ll survive, but damn was that traumatic. Cat Power started playing on my iPod without intervention.
Anyway, after perusing REPC today, I stopped by Uwajimaya, a fantastic grocery store in Chinatown (and right across the street from my office). I was going to buy a turkey, but they only had fresh ones so I decided to wait a little longer. Wouldn’t that be awesome to serve salmonella to my Thanksgiving guests.
Oh, did I mention that I love my new iSight? I do. It’s great. Although I tried to have a little webcam thing with Ryan today and it didn’t work out. I dunno. Firewall stuff maybe? Maybe. We’ll see.
I’m going to make brownies. I got all the ingredients today.
